I've always liked them more, specifically because of the door games. It was fun to get online and play your turns on something ( like BRE or Tradewars ), and wait in suspense for the next day to roll around and see what damage the other's did to you, or if your attacks did well and stuff. It was also neat to talk to other people in the city over the chat functions and then the BBS meet ups that we used to have. Those were all fun!

100% agree, I remember in the 90s being amazed that I could talk to someone in another country over something like Fidonet without paying for long distance calls, was kind of crazy at the time :)

I never really did play Tradewars or BRE, I was way to invested in LORD, maybe I should give those a go now that I am here :)

I hear you - in the first half of the '90s, you could get mail through
the backbones with just an overnight call. In the later half of the
90s, I discovered internet/Fido transport, and set my system to poll my
uplink several times a day. Getting mail the same day from around the
world from an old DOS box in the corner was an incredible leap.

It also blows my mind that a community still exists in the BBS space, back in the day everyone seemed to know everyone "locally" over a handful of BBSes, it seems there are a few of us left internationally so that sense of community is still here.

i would call them cliques, not communities. things are very very
    different.
